As a 32-year-old woman I have never bought a single piece of football merchandise, and yet I would have snapped one up. So why is Nike not offering them?
As a 32-year-old woman I have never bought a single piece of football merchandise. I have never been moved enough by a player to have even considered it. And yet on Sunday, following that penalty, Earps’ exquisite choice of expressive language on the pitch, and liking the colour of the shirt, I found myself Googling it only to see that it wasn’t available. A missed sale.
Earps’s stunning save of a penalty in the final against Spain – and her colourful reaction – cemented her status as a national heroine Back in July, Earps said that the omission of her shirt from the shelves had been “hugely disappointing and very hurtful”. She: “It is something I have been fighting behind closed doors.” “I have been trying to go through the correct channels as much as possible…unfortunately, it has become very evident that is not possible and there is not going to be an acceptable solution for the young kids out there.” She said that she had even offered to pay for them to be produced.
As time has passed, it has only become clearer and clearer how much of an own goal this is for the sports brand – that a decision made in a boardroom has come back to bite it in the most public way.to sell an Earps shirt now has almost 130,000 signatures. The former sports minister Tracey Crouch MP has submitted a motion to Parliament calling for it to happen. And many small, independent brands have started selling their own versions of Earps tribute tops.
