Nicola Sturgeon left the SNP "deeply demoralised" with members "shaken" by events that followed her resignation, an expert on the party has said.
The SNP was then thrown into crisis in April following the arrests of its former chief executive and treasurer by detectives investigating how donations were spent. In an article for Edinburgh University, Mitchell said she had "inherited a very healthy party" but subsequently left it worse off. But her government ran intro trouble over several of its high-profile policies, including gender recognition reform and the nationalisation of the Ferguson Marine shipyard.
"She left a legacy of policy failures, a deeply divided party, troubled party finances, a sharp decline in membership, and a deeply demoralised party shaken by the events and news that emerged after her resignation."
