There needs to be “compromise on both sides" to make a deal that would bring the Scottish teachers' strike to an end, Nicola Sturgeon has said.Both the EIS and the Association of Headteachers and Deputes in Scotland began a rolling 16-day programme of strike action on Monday.
But she stated her Scottish Government was “not a Government that simply digs our heels in in industrial disputes”. She cited talks which have so far prevented strikes by NHS staff north of the border as proof of this. EIS general secretary Andrew Bradley said that teachers were prepared to strike into the new academic year if necessary.
“We would hope that this dispute is brought to a much swifter resolution than that but that’s not to say that if there isn’t a resolution, that our members will not be prepared to take action beyond that. Unions have rejected a pay offer which would see most teachers receive a 5 per cent wage rise, although the lowest earners would get an increase of 6.85 per cent.
She said the highest rate of the pay offer applies to just 8.4 per cent of teachers. Many of these fail to secure permanent work after their probationary year.She stated: “Strikes in our schools are in no one’s interest – including for pupils, parents and carers who have already had to deal with significant disruption over the past three years.
