The Yorishireman led mariners to the A League title last season and is the leading candidate to replace Lee Johnson in Leith.

The Englishman was sacked just over a week ago after a 3-2 home defeat to Livingston and club legend David Gray has been placed in temporary charge. He led the Hibees to an impressive 2-0 victory away to Aberdeen at the weekend to pick up their first points of the season. But that's unlikely to land him a crack at the job on a permanent basis.

At 1.39 goals conceded per game, Mariners were relatively solid at the back, winning 62.2 per cent of their defensive duels. Aerial duels won were just under half at 47.8 per cent Formation Montgomery is a bit old school in that he preferred a 4-4-2 with Mariners last season. With two slightly deeper midfielders, two wingers and one slightly deeper forward, he deployed the system in 75 per cent of games.

The man himself Born in Leeds but eligible for Scotland, Montgomery was a hard working midfielder who spent the majority of his career at Sheffield United. He joined mariners as a player in 2012 and became assistant coach after retiring and was promoted to the top job in 2021.
