It’s a long-standing problem that is exacerbated by schools continuing to include multiple branded and logoed items in their uniform policies
A Northern Ireland mum has praised Labour’s plan to reduce school uniform costs while Stormont remains dormant.
It follows a report last week that highlighted how families are having to cut back on food to afford the mounting costs of school gear.Save the Children NI found one in three parents here have to borrow money to pay for their kids’ uniforms and PE kits. “We would encourage the Labour Party to engage with children and families to hear what interventions they would most like to see.“The pledge to retain, in legislation, a maximum of three branded items could still keep costs higher than what many families could afford. In Northern Ireland 78% of those surveyed by Save the Children believe authorities are not doing enough to keep down the cost of uniforms and PE kit and 99% want action.
The 2018 circular to all schools outlines “the need to keep costs to a minimum and ensure that items are available ‘off the peg’ from a number of retail outlets so that the school uniform does not become a barrier for children from low income families attending the school”.
