'It's come to the stage of do I really want to be here? It's just hard to look at myself.'
A Lisburn man, who needs an urgent operation to help remove two extremely large hernias, says he's been left feeling "deformed and depressed" 'after a three year wait.
"The big hernias have appeared and they keep growing. They make me feel like I'm not normal - I don't want to go out or do anything. I'm wearing bigger clothes just to try and hide them because I think people are looking at me." He admitted that his mental health has suffered as a result of his current plight: "I was the life and soul of the party and now I'm on antidepressants. I've never been on antidepressants and now they've just upped them because I feel so low. It's come to the stage of do I really want to be here? It's just hard to look at myself.
"I had my hopes built up that I was having it done this summer but when I went back to Belfast they told me that hospital wasn't big enough to do my operation. The records people rang me up to see if I'd be interested in going to Dublin to have the surgery and I said yes. In a statement to Belfast Live, a Department of Health spokesperson said: "Bariatric surgery is not currently commissioned in Northern Ireland. Over the last few years, the Department has developed a model of a prototype bariatric service.
