Johnny says the journey, albeit not an easy one for anybody to go through, has changed his life completely for the better
A Northern Ireland man will take on a running challenge this month to mark his five years of sobriety.
"In 2015/16, I became a board member. HURT wanted someone on the board who had been through it. I am now chairperson, for the last few years, which I am extremely proud of. "It was ruining my life. I lost family, friends, relationships, everything - all because of my addiction. Even though I had been in HURT a few times, they never once closed their doors on me. They have an open door policy."
"I am up running and socialising with the people in the running club I am in, Star Running Club. It is night and day from where I was to the man I am today. "They kick off on August 17, in Donegal. At the end of April, I was injured so started the couch to 5K. Now, I am running five days a week, and would do ten or 11 miles each day. It has gotten easier because of the support I have from people in the running club.
"You'll get to milestones and before you know it, you'll maybe have gone a year, and it will be worth it. It all starts with that initial phonecall, that is the hard part, but rewarding."
