A leading GP has urged people to be alert after health experts confirmed that the new variant of Covid-19 has been detected in Northern Ireland
.
Despite the surge in cases across the UK, overall levels of hospital admission remain "extremely low". "That's right across the age spectrum too although we tend to see patients who are sicker because most of these types of illnesses are self-limiting and most people can self-medicate. "What we'll often find if we're taking a call or seeing someone with new respiratory symptoms they'll often tell us they've used a Covid test because their symptoms sound like that."
"Certainly whether it's Covid or not it's a good idea to try and self-isolate to avoid spreading it around and just practice good respiratory hygiene which we're all very well-used to now. According to the latest statistics, there has been an increase in the number of community acquired emergency Covid-19 hospital admissions in the current week compared to the previous week.
