Learning a second language is not compulsory for pupils in primary schools in Northern Ireland.

Its findings are based on responses from 82 primary school principals and more than 1,100 Year Nine post-primary pupils. Some primary principals told the report's authors why they thought languages should be taught to their pupils. But that enthusiasm does not translate into particularly high uptake for languages at GCSE or A-level.Some teachers told the report's authors that the way exams were set, marked and graded put pupils off taking languages at GCSE and A-level.marked too severelyThat was in response to concerns from schools in Northern Ireland that it is harder to receive high marks in language exams.
