BT will stop offering traditional landlines to most new customers despite fears for the elderly
Northern Ireland will finally switch off its old landline telephone network soon, meaning you'll have to use broadband to make calls.BT is no longer providing landline connections to most new customers and people joining from this week may have to plug their landline phone into a broadband router.The UK's ageing landline telephone network is set to be switched off within two years, as the country moves from 19th-century copper wire to modern broadband.
Those who don't have broadband will have to get it installed in order to keep making landline calls using a system called VoIP , which requires an Internet connection. Digital Voice needs a broadband connection and electricity for it to work but critics have pointed out that digital phones are cut off in power or internet outages.
One major problem, with the storms being a case in point, is that while analogue phones still work in the event of a power outage or broadband going down, Digital Voice devices do not. "Since then we've had other power outages where the same thing has happened. The problem is, where we live our mobile reception is very poor so when our Digital Voice phone goes down we can't rely on a mobile, which is a major worry for us."
"Identifying people who may be at risk because they rely on their landline is crucial. We expect companies to communicate effectively with these customers and make sure they get the support they need.”
