The college which became Northern Ireland's seat of government
Politicians gather on the steps of the college before the first session of the new parliament in September 1921
The students moved out and politicians took over in September 1921, while they waited for Stormont to be built., which meant the Union Theological College on Botanic Avenue was the centre of political power in Belfast for more than a decade.Political events moved quickly during that period, which meant the first meetings of the newly-elected Northern Ireland parliament were hastily-arranged.
Negotiations with the Presbyterian Church for use of their south Belfast training college took place during the summer but there was a dispute over the proposed rent. The Rev Prof Gordon Campbell, the current college principal, said the rent agreement should be seen in its historical context. "It doesn't seem to have disrupted the church's aim of training its ministers. They could simply do that in another place and did so for much longer than the three years initially agreed."There was an upper and a lower house in the parliament, based on the Westminster model.
