NHS consultants have begun their first major strike in nearly 50 years, bringing routine care to a “virtual standstill” “The NHS cannot fully function without consultants,” said chief executive, Sir Julian Hartley
The union has called the Government’s offer of a 6 per cent pay rise “derisory” as doctors have seen a real-term pay cut of over a third in the last 14 years.
The health department said additional payments such as clinical excellence awards and cash for being on call would take the average NHS pay for consultants in 2023-24 to around £134,000. A letter sent to hospital chiefs by the BMA and NHS England earlier this month said life and limb cover would be provided.
