Six people have been evacuated from their homes, as rain continued to pelt through New York in one of the wettest days on record.
More than eight inches of rain fell in parts of the city on Friday, knocking out rail and commuter lines.
In Mamaroneck, a Westchester County suburb north of the city, emergency officials used inflatable rafts to rescue people trapped in buildings by floods. “I was so worried,” she said, explaining it became too dangerous to leave. “Outside was like a lake, like an ocean.” Mohammed Doha, a 52-year-old construction worker who lives in a ground-level, two-bedroom apartment on the border between Brooklyn and Queens, splashed through his kitchen in sandals.
Virtually every subway line was at least partly suspended, rerouted or running with delays due to the flooding.
