One of Nottingham's popular Indian restaurants has changed hands and will soon be getting a new name and a new menu
One of Nottingham's popular Indian restaurants has changed hands and will soon be getting a new name and a new menu. Kottaram Restaurant will replace the Maharaja's Retreat in the city's so-called 'curry mile', Maid Marian Way.
The restaurant has been trading under the old name since being sold in July but soon it will switch to offer pan Indian cuisine. "This restaurant is a new concept in the vibrant city of Nottingham which caters to a vast variety of Indian cuisine touching from the North to South of India which includes dosa and thali," said Vinod Payyoor Manghat, who is part of the management team.
Dishes will include Kottaram Konju Fry, famous in Kerala, with king prawns, Kerala Chicken Curry and Bamboo Biriyani. Kadal Meen Pollichathu is a traditional South Indian fish delicacy, wrapped in a banana leaf with the chef's special onion masala.Curry classics madras, tikka masala, rogan josh and korma and Mumbai street food are also on the menu. The 70-seater restaurant was first opened by the owners of Calcutta Club, another Indian restaurant in Maid Marian Way, in May 2019.
Former owner John Dhaliwal said Maharaja's Retreat had taken a hit due to staff shortages after emerging from the pandemic. He said: "It was post-Covid - I think everybody's operating methods have changed. We were finding it very, very difficult at that point trying to trade with two outlets and a deficiency of staff. We'd rather maintain one and do it properly, rather than two and stretch ourselves. We were really pushed at the beginning of the year.
Maid Marian Way is also home to The Cumin, MemSaab and 4550 Miles from Delhi. Kottaram Restaurant will be opening earlier in the day to serve lunch from noon to 3pm as well as in the evenings.
