It's been hailed as a momentous breakthrough after decades of failure in the search for effective treatment
For the first time, scientists have developed a drug which slows the destruction of the brain in Alzheimer's patients. After decades of failure, the new medicine known as Lecanemab, has been heralded a momentous moment for researchers, as it shows that a new era of drugs to treat the most common form of dementia is possible.
Lecanemab works by attacking the sticky gunge - called beta amyloid - that builds up in the brains of people with Alzheimer's. Up to now, people with the disease can only be given drugs to help manage their symptoms, rather than anything to change the course of the condition. The trial saw 1,795 volunteers with early stage Alzheimer's take part. Infusions of the medicine were given every fortnight.
