Neonatal nurse accused of ‘poisoning babies’ allegedly attacked twin brothers, trial hears

A neonatal nurse accused of 'poisoning babies' allegedly attacked twin brothers, a trial has heard. Lucy Letby, 32, is charged with murdering seven babies and faces 15 attempted murder charges involving ten more children.

During the hours into the day shift, Child L’s glucose levels fell to ‘abnormally low levels’. Throughout the day he was given additional doses of glucose in an attempt to correct that low blood sugar, but it proved ineffective, it was said. Evidence from medical experts who had reviewed the case suggested this was ‘insulin poisoning’ which was administered through liquid feed, prosecutors allege.

Despite initially not responding well to resuscitation, he was given six doses of adrenaline before he made a sudden improvement. He has since made a speedy recovery, the court heard. Independent medical experts concluded that Child N’s screaming was consistent with inflicted injury or him having received an injection of air.Child N was almost ready to go home, save for being treated for jaundice, when Ms Letby went into his room to say “hello”. When a second nurse turned her back Ms Letby said he had lost oxygen and was assisting with his breathing.
