The university canceled Wednesday classes for Volleyball Day. It's a 'monumental task' to manage, AD Trev Alberts said.

include commitments from seven players, all ranked in the top 25 of their classes. Four were selected to play this month at the FIVB U19 World Championships, at which their U.S. team won gold.“It’s really hard to get to the top,” Alberts said. “The reality is, to stay at the top is much more difficult. And then to do it as long as John has done it is almost unthinkable.”

Media reports track the Huskers daily from August to December. Twenty of their 29 regular-season matches this year are set to be televised, including Wednesday night, when the Big Ten Network will start from Lincoln with a pregame show. Cook, 67, possesses the energy of a coach 30 years younger. He grew up in San Diego and coached at Nebraska as an assistant from 1989 to 1991 before taking over at Wisconsin. He returned in 1999 for one year on the bench of former coach Terry Pettit, then Cook won a title in his first season at the helm.

Peterson noticed that some bonds lost a bit of grip. She spearheaded an effort to keep ex-Huskers — and by association, the volleyball community — in step with the program. An inherent pressure seems to loom above the program. After all, the Huskers are about to walk out in front of the largest crowd ever to attend a volleyball match. Their position in the spotlight has the opposite effect, though, Cook said, because of the connection forged to 98 All-Americans who’ve worn the same uniform.“We use that as kind of a superpower for us,” Cook said. “It’s like, ‘Man, there have been some great players here. And you guys can do the same things. It’s been done before.

“I won’t be able to picture it until I’m in it,” said freshman setter Bergen Reilly, one of the new starters this season. “I’m so excited, I don’t have words for it.”Emotions might overwhelm some of the former Huskers who felt so honored in their time to play in front of a crowd 5 percent as large as what they’ll see Wednesday.
