Almost 4.45 million cancer deaths in 2019 were caused by smoking, drinking, being overweight and other known risk factors, a new study suggests

.

Dr Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington's School of Medicine, said: "This study illustrates that the burden of cancer remains an important public health challenge that is growing in magnitude around the world. Behavioural risk factors such as smoking, alcohol use, unsafe sex and dietary risks were responsible for the vast majority of cancer burden globally, accounting for 3.7 million deaths, the study found.

According to the study, risk factors included in the analysis accounted for 105 million cancer DALYs globally for both sexes in 2019 – 42% of all DALYs in that year. Between 2010 and 2019, cancer deaths due to risk factors rose by 20.4% globally, increasing from 3.7 million to 4.45 million.
