Nearly a million Brits face a Christmas in isolation tomorrow. However, some have suggested they intend to break quarantine given they only have mild symptoms.
An estimated 1.7 million people in the UK had Covid-19 in the week ending December 19, the highest number since comparable figures began in autumn 2020
And, if case numbers continue to climb in the way they have in the past two days, more than 100,000 will be diagnosed today placing them in quarantine until the end of the year. This potentially allows the 243,000 people who tested positive for Covid between December 16 and 18 in England to release from quarantine in time for the festivities,But many will still spend Christmas Day in isolation, although some have suggested that due to only experiencing mild symptoms, such as a runny nose, they will break quarantine rules to see those they love.
One man said: ‘If I isolated every time I’ve come into contact with someone that has covid I would’ve had to take probably at least 60 days off this year alone, who’s covering that?’ UK Health Security Agency chief executive Dr Jenny Harries has said data suggests Omicron may be less likely to lead to serious illness than the Delta variant.
