This front office’s goal is and has always been to trade for a star.
According to league sources, the Knicks have signaled to other teams that if the right star becomes available, they will be aggressive in pursuing him. They have lots of desirables to move. New York owns all of its first-round picks moving forward, as well as four protected ones from other teams: the Washington Wizards’ in 2024, the Detroit Pistons’ in 2024, the Dallas Mavericks’ in 2024 and the Milwaukee Bucks’ in 2025.
But for now, it’s not clear who that desired star might be. The names circulating the internet these days all have flaws. Karl-Anthony Towns would bring concerns about defense, as well as others about a loaded contract. It would cost a massive haul to acquire him, too. It’s not like the Minnesota Timberwolves are trying to give him away, even after an underwhelming season.Damian Lillard is a first-ballot Hall of Famer who still has his fastball, but he’s another small guard. Remember, the Knicks don’t have to be as thirsty for a big name as they could have justified being in the past.
