The EU has vowed to wean itself off Russian gas by 2027 after its invasion of Ukraine with Moscow even threatening to shut off pipelines altogether, leading experts to warn the chances of blackouts have risen to the highest in years. During winter, Britain can normally negotiate gas back from mainland Europe through higher prices, but there is no guarantee that will happen this year if supplies are stretched elsewhere.
