Though unconfirmed by Washington, sources familiar with Ms Pelosi’s itinerary said she is expected to arrive in Taiwan’s capital Taipei later on Tuesday, where she will meet with the Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.which claimed the visit would be “a gross interference” in its internal affairs.While there have been no official announcements, local media in Taiwan reported that Ms Pelosi will arrive in Taipei on Tuesday night.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Monday that it would be “a gross interference in China’s internal affairs” if Ms Pelosi visits Taiwan.When asked what kind of measures the armed forces might take, Mr Zhao said: “If she dares to go, then let us wait and see.” Chinese President Xi Jinping warned Joe Biden that Washington should abide by the one-China principle and “those who play with fire will perish by it”.Several Chinese planes and warships flew and sailed close to the median line dividing the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday morning, a source told Reuters, saying they “squeezed” the unofficial demarcation in a move described as “very provocative”.
“We will not take the bait or engage in sabre-rattling. At the same time, we will not be intimidated,” he added.
