‘It's an awful situation that makes me feel really unsafe’: Women speak about receiving unsolicited contact
Unsolicited contact is defined as messages or phone calls from company workers who have access to your customer details.Audio engineer Brooke was contacted by a staff member who checked her in two weeks after her stay. “About two or three hours after we checked in, I got a friend request on Facebook and Instagram,” she says, “then I got a message saying: ‘Hi we spoke a little bit earlier before, I was just wondering if you were single?’ I was really taken aback.”
“Companies have a legal obligation to comply with data protection laws and respond to complaints,” Emma says, “they should also have privacy notices on their websites, with information on how you can complain”. “If you're collecting people's personal data, to provide goods and services, companies have to comply - no matter how small a company is,” she adds.Deputy commissioner for regulatory policy at the information commissioner’s office , Emily Keaney, says the ICO’s approach is to focus on helping organisations put policies, processes and training in place, however they have power to take action on issues if need be.
