Nadia Almada made history 19 years ago as the first trans woman to win a UK-based reality programme. Talking to Metro about her historic Big Brother win she said that there was 'acceptance' at the time but believes 'trans rights have ‘gone backwards’
As well as being given £63,500, and becoming an overnight celebrity with new career opportunities – she released the single A Little Bit of Action and appeared on Hollyoaks – the reality TV show gave her something that money can’t buy – an acceptance that she’d previously never felt before in her life.
‘I was embraced and that was a beautiful thing. It came from cisgender males, cisgender females, everyone! The whole country was behind me and they adored me.’ ‘Cockroaches and Big Brother are the two things that always survive. I think that’s the saying,’ she announced with a laugh. ‘I feel like I’m now passing the baton on to the younger generation.’
