The film was muted – I was risking enough being downstairs watching TV past midnight already and didn’t want to push my luck – but that didn’t diminish the effect of one scene, in which three bare-breasted women surrounded Keanu Reeves in a bloody orgy. I was immediately intrigued – but, to my surprise, not by Keanu.
In those days, my family lived in Southall in a small house where there was nowhere to hide; you couldn’t make much noise without alerting everyone in the house to what you were doing. Later, in my early teens, we would move to Hounslow, another area with a large immigrant population. My parents had come to London from India in the ’70s, and settled where they already knew various people – my mum working in a clothes factory, my dad in various restaurant kitchens.
There is a suggestion in my culture that homosexuality isn’t for “us”, that it’s a lifestyle for white people while “we” are expected to be straight, get married, have multiple children and continue the family name. The irony, of course, is that both gender and sexual fluidity are central to South Asian history, folklore and spiritual culture. Homosexuality was criminalised by the colonial British in 1860, before being decriminalised again by Indians in 2018.
Still, I followed a heteronormative trajectory for much of my life up until that point. I got into relationships with cisgender men, suppressing any desires I had for people of other genders, and presented as a straight woman. I got engaged and began to plan for a wedding. It was only when I realised I was planning that wedding without thinking about the groom that I knew I had to stop lying.
