Live music venues have said they are “walking a tightrope” as more than a quarter are considering closing due to high energy costs, according to new research

Lighthouse Poole Centre for Arts is among the live music venues which has seen its energy bills double Live music venues have said they are “walking a tightrope” as more than a quarter are considering closing due to highAs cost of living pressures continue to affect consumers and businesses, live music venues have been left particularly exposed to recent energy price rises.

Lighthouse’s energy bills make up around 10 per cent of their total costs but they have been forced to sign up to two-year, fixed-tariff rate at around double the previous rate. Lighthouse has been looking at ways to reduce their energy costs, such as installing solar panels, or replacing the lighting rig with a newer, more efficient, LED one., the venue gets most of its income from individual donations and Government grants, which are handed out through the Arts Council.

Ms McBain acknowledged “it’s a difficult ask” when performance venues call for more Government support and believes energy firms should be put under more pressure to offer better rates for businesses.Ticket prices have risen by around 25.1 per cent on average across the venues, but even that can’t make up for changes in customers’ behavior.

Some venues have turned to cost-cutting measures, by training staff in energy efficiency measures , switching to more efficient lighting , and cutting down on the use of air conditioning and heating . The Music Venue Trust is a charity which supports grassroots music venues. They run an emergency fund that venues can apply for if they need financial support. Last year, 65 venues were supported with the fund, but this year 160 have applied already for assistance.
