Eva-Rose sadly died just minutes after being born at 26 weeks - her twin sister Dottie-Mae survived

The birth of their beautiful twin girls should have been the happiest day of their lives for mum Kerry Parker and dad Simon Stevens. Tragically, firstborn Eva-Rose managed to get into an unusual position during birth, and she died just minutes after being delivered.

Ms Law told the inquest that at 3.21am Kerry, from Clitheroe, had started to push involuntarily which indicated the babies would be born imminently. Kerry had been given steroids to speed up the development of the twins' lungs and although Eva-Rose's heartbeat had begun to decelerate, monitoring showed no signs that she was suffering from a lack of oxygen.

When Eva-Rose was born her head and shoulders came out first in a position known as a 'compound birth' which carries additional risk. In the safest presentation a baby is born head first with the rest of the body following. Fellow midwife Lisa Waring recalled how Dottie-Mae was taken to the neonatal unit while Eva-Rose stayed with Kerry after it became apparent she was not going to survive. "There was no sign of life and we would be led by the family and what they want," Ms Waring said.

The inquest heard that Kerry was 26 weeks plus four days when she went into labour. "When we talk about prematurity, at 24 weeks survival is at around 60 per cent, and this increases significantly at 32 weeks to 95 per cent survival," Mr Maher added. An investigation was carried out by East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Burnley General Hospital, after Eva-Rose's death, which identified areas of improvement but no issues which had caused or contributed to her death. The medical cause of death was given as extreme prematurity.
