Catherine Clarke has suffered several personal issues whilst trying to achieve her dreams, even being pronounced dead for a short period last year
A mum's dream to become a welder has been a decade in the running after suffering with personal and health issues, including mental health problems and cervical cancer treatment.
"I started off doing one day a week and then eight months later, I decided I was going to give up my full time job. I chanced everything and I went to Recycling Lives full-time for free. She chose to continue with welding and things were looking up again, as she was pursuing a career she was passionate about and a new relationship gave her a new lease of life. Then in 2022, Catherine "dropped dead" and was "plagued with cervical cancer issues," being diagnosed with the condition twice in the space of six months.
"I remember some of it, the last thing I remember was shouting out 'I can't do take this anymore, the pain's too much' and then I was gone. I gave the team a fright but then I came back. However, not only have Catherine's personal issues set her back in her plight to becoming an established welder, but she also reflects on the difficulties of pursuing an engineering career as a woman. She said: "You get a lot of savage sexism, especially when you're a female welder.
Catherine is now enrolled into college for September to continue her welding career and achieve her Level 3 qualification. In the meantime, she has looked into funding solutions to help her kickstart the next stage of her life to become a self-employed welder.
