Not knowing of the steep six metre drop on the other side, the young boy walked forward before losing his footing and falling into the level below

A mum has spoken of her anguish after her child was injured by falling into a large gap outside of a historic Nottingham building. Douglas Comerford, eight, had just crossed the road with his grandparents at around 5pm on August 7, when he jumped onto a short wall fronting South Sherwood Street at the former central police and fire station.

"It is absolutely filled with litter and God knows else, and he landed very close to a manhole so he was lucky he did not go through that. There are no signs or warning of that drop on the other side for his grandparents to see - people looking after children from other places wouldn't know there was danger there.

Douglas sustained two "very deep" lacerations to his thighs, for which he was assessed in A&E at King's Mill Hospital. He went to hospital with his grandparents, who are from Mansfield. His wounds, which were described as "grisly" by his mother, were stitched up but this has limited Douglas' physical activity and his enjoyment of a recent holiday with his family.

A man broke his leg in 2019 after falling into the same space. A Nottingham City Council spokesperson said: “We were very sorry to hear that Douglas tripped and fell while walking along this wall and are pleased to hear that he seems to be making a good recovery. The building has stood here for more than eighty years and in that time hundreds of thousands of people have generally walked past without incident.
