An attack by Belarusian anti-government activists on a Russian surveillance plane is “a demonstration to Russia that its high-value assets are not safe in Belarus”, a Chatham House expert has said ClaireGilbodyD reports:

The Beriev A-50 aircraft, which has the Nato reporting name of Mainstay, is a Russian airborne early warning aircraft, with airborne command and control capabilities, and the ability to track up to 60 targets at a time.

“I am proud of all Belarusians who continue to resist the Russian hybrid occupation of Belarus & fight for the freedom of Ukraine,” Belarus opposition leader, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, wrote on Twitter.Tens of thousands of anti-government activists have been arrested in the past few years under Mr Lukashenko, who won a sixth term following a 2020 election which critics say was rigged. He stood accused of terrorism, organising mass riots and of inciting social hatred, allegations he denied.
