Homelessness in the capital has reached record levels
The number of people sleeping rough in the capital has hit a new record high.in 2020/21 – nearly double the number there was a decade ago.
Numbers rebounded as the scheme started to be wound down in the summer and the Salvation Army said they now threaten to ‘spiral out of control’. ‘Many people are being forced onto the streets for the first time in the economic downturn, and they must be helped to rebuild their lives. In 2011/12 Chain found 5,678 people sleeping rough and the new count showed a 94% increase this year.
Less than one in three had an alcohol need and 31% had a drug need, compared to 39% of rough sleepers having drug or alcohol reliance in 2019/20.
