At least 329 others hurt following 'quake that registered 6.8 on the Richter scale
More than 600 people have died in Morocco after a powerful earthquake struck about 50 miles from the city of Marrakesh late last night.Although the epicentre of the earthquake was Morocco's High Atlas mountains, residents of Marrakech report that some buildings had collapsed in the old city - a UNESCO world heritage site that is a popular destination for Brits.
A frantic rescue effort was taking shape overnight and this morning in the mountainous terrain, where many affected people are said to be in hard-to-reach areas.Morocco’s Interior Ministry said at least 329 others had been transported to hospitals with injuries. Another man in the historic city described feeling a "violent tremor" and seeing "buildings moving". Tremors were reportedly felt in the capital Rabat, over 200 miles away, as well as Casablanca and Essaouira.
