MoD recorded 300 'near-misses'

Army chiefs have warned tourists to 'respect' military firing ranges located amid some of Yorkshire's most attractive scenery.

The county has two main live firing areas where soldiers train for battle, near Catterick Garrison, the British Army's biggest garrison. They are: Feldom Ranges between Feldom Lane and Cordilleras Lane, near Marske; and Wathgill Camp Training area, near Downholme. The areas are as pretty as you'd expect to find in the Dales – but they're also where live bullets and artillery are fired. Seemingly peaceful areas can become battlefields instantly.

But stray onto land within the danger area and you can be arrested, detained and fined up to £500 by magistrates. Worse, you could be seriously injured or killed.Head of the MoD training estate Brigadier Jonathan Bartholomew said: "We welcome people enjoying our training areas – many of which are in prime beauty spots – but we want to remind the public the land can quickly change from calm surroundings to battlefields.
