Student Joshua Smith sits down with MLA Kate Nicholl to discuss how she wants to change politics from within Stormont
Northern Ireland remains in political limbo. The Assembly’s attempts to elect a speaker remain futile, and while Sunak’s Windsor Framework has gained praise from fellow Conservatives, it has done little to reassure Unionists.
Ms Nicholl first became a councillor in 2016 but had previously worked under former MLA Anna Lo. Today she is the Alliance’s spokesperson on immigration. Previously, Ms Nicholl has spoken of the “staggering” racism she witnessed when working for Ana, I wanted to know if she believed there had been enough change on this matter even during periods of functioning government.
“I totally understand why Patricia left and I think this is the reality of it. We’re going to lose talent, to Northern Ireland’s detriment. For me personally, I just am completely driven by wanting to make this place work for my children, and other people’s children and for the next generation to be proud to live here.
“We know that there’s some jobs where flexible working just won’t be an option, but there’s plenty where it will be. And the current system is keeping people out of employment. That’s not just bad for the economy but for people’s own self-worth. Ms Nicholl’s motivations still feel paradoxical, despite claiming to be “completely driven” to help her constituents, she remains a member of an executive with a deadlock she openly detests. To better understand this, I closed by asking what inspired her during the ongoing political stalemate.
