Smith has been trying to get this made for 20 years. Perhaps she should have left it

It’s 1967 in the fictional Irish town of Ballygar near Dublin, a cheerful, down-at-heel place where everyone knows everyone else’s business. A group of local women are determined to win the talent show and get themselves on a free pilgrimage to Lourdes in France where bathing in the holy water has long been said to prompt miracles.), an affable mod who is desperate for her silent son to learn to talk. Eileen has just found a lump on her breast, although hasn’t yet told her hapless husband .

The classy ensemble carries the film some way, with Irish director and cinematographer Thaddeus O’Sullivan allowing plenty of room for the characters’ beautifully expressive faces to do the work. Can there be hope of reconciliation? Of course there can! Linney is particularly good here as the outcast, her face drawn and sad before determination sets in. But the limp, predictable plot ultimately lets its cast down.

The whole “miracles aren’t quite what you think they are” shtick ends up patronising the very women it’s meant to empower. Particularly when they’re all marvellously happy to be reunited with spouses who, frankly, just don’t seem very nice. Various believers, including Smith, have been trying to get this film made for nearly 20 years, until British producer Chris Curling finally got it off the ground. Perhaps they should have left it. It has plenty of star power, but no real oomph.Album ReviewsIf The Fall of the House of Usher is a true story and how to watch new Netflix horror series
