Cheers to winter, says Oliver.
“The pub is where great ideas are born and friends are made,” says Miquita Oliver. The London-born TV presenter is talking with her friends, Lydia Mcneill and Natalie Hartley, founders of the pre-loved clothing label,, which has recently launched a range of sweatshirts, called The Island Collection, and inspired by that Great British institution: the local pub.
The vintage and sustainably sourced tops are distinguished by the retro towelling beer mats stitched onto the front. You remember those? Once found on top of pub bars all over the country, usually beer-soaked, but always summoning up that uniquely British good time pub vibe., Oliver wears a sweatshirt emblazoned with a Red Stripe mat.
This idea of how pubs play a part in community and all of our lives was an idea Mcneill and Hartley got to thinking about during the pandemic. “The areas we live in, Kensal Green and Harlesden, have very close communities, where the local pubs are a regular meeting place,” says Hartley. “Post-lockdown before everything was fully open, one of our friends designed a fully equipped pub at the end of their garden to bring people back together.
They collected a whole stack more – some rare one-offs and some multiples of the same brand and had them stitched on to organic brushed cotton sweatshirts, which are made in India . The first drop came in late summer and on 5 October, they launched another, each priced at £120.
