Ministers are planning to impose extraordinary measures to increase supply of antibiotics to treat children with strep A, including importing unlicensed medicines from abroad 🔴 janemerrick23

Ministers are planning to impose extraordinary measures to increase supply of antibiotics to treat children with Strep A, including importing unlicensed medicines from abroad, it has emerged.and scarlet fever have led to a surge in demand for penicillin and other antibiotics, with shortages reported by many pharmacies across the country – including one family who reportedly had to travel 20 miles with a prescription.

While there is no “supplier shortage” nationally of antibiotics, the Department of Health has admitted that there are problems getting medicines to chemists quickly enough. It is also considering exploring the import of unlicensed medicines from abroad and commissioning clinical advice on alternative options from specialist clinicians.

Penicillin V, the first choice to treat Strep A infections, is available in both liquid suspension form, which is prescribed for children, and in tablet dosages but there has been a “particularly sharp increase in demand in the past week which has meant that stocks in wholesalers have been depleted very quickly and replenishments haven’t kept in step with demand, which remains higher than usual”, government sources said.
