Critics say the legislation, which will end the right to have an asylum claim heard for most arrivals, will do ‘nothing’ to address the ‘chaos and incompetence that blights our asylum system’

It comes as the UK braces for a surge in Channel crossings this spring, with attempts to reach the UK by small boat typically peaking during more seasonable weather between May and September.

Christina Marriott, executive director of strategy at the Red Cross, called it “extremely concerning”. Sonya Sceats, chief executive at charity Freedom from Torture, said: “The proposals in this ill-judged bill are vindictive and dysfunctional. Rishi Sunak is dialling up the cruelty against people fleeing torture and war to distract from the scandals that continue to engulf his Government.

Enver Soloman, the chief executive of the Refugee Council, said: “These plans shatter the UK’s long-standing commitment under the UN convention to give people a fair hearing regardless of the path they have taken to reach our shores.
