'It's going to be very close.' President Joe Biden says so far the Democrats have 'lost very few seats for certain' and still have 'a possibility of keeping' the House of Representatives. US midterms: 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233 and YouTube

This first live counter shows the make-up of the House of Representatives so far.

The Democrats made a potentially crucial gain in Pennsylvania, but are still battling tight defences in Nevada and Georgia which could turn the Senate to the Republicans. The Republicans only need to make one gain in this election overall to take control. Appearing around 15 minutes later than expected, President Joe Biden comes out with a celebratory tone and says this is a"good day for America".

Last night's better-than-expected midterm results have been a welcome boost for Joe Biden, and could help tip the balance on whether he will run for president a second time. "President Biden will and should run for re-election, and he'll win," Jennifer Holdsworth said. Biden allies have said he is on track to win a second term, and critics among the Democrats will fall silent for now.

A former Trump campaign official told NBC News that the Republicans will be in danger if Mr Trump wins the nomination for a third presidential run and focuses on punishing enemies. In his first public comments since the results have become more clear, Donald Trump denied he had a bad night. The man who lost the last election and the popular vote in both the last two elections appears to have been electoral kryptonite for the Republicans in these midterms. They may now need to find a way to exorcise his spirit from the party. That may not be easy.
