The Levelling Up Secretary was accused of breaking pledges not to scale back environmental protections
Michael Gove has been accused of breaking eight years of promises not to weaken environmental laws,The accusation came during a meeting the Levelling Up Secretary and Therese Coffey, the Environment Secretary, called to win over the UK’s leading wildlife and environment groups on Thursday morning.on housebuilders.
“The Government has got all this information from one source, homebuilders, and seems to just be blindly listening to their side of the story without checking the evidence,” Mr Bennett said. The nutrient neutrality law has helped create one of the most advanced markets for ecosystem services, a mechanism central to many of the Government’s upcoming environmental reforms, but that would now be killed off said Mr Bennett.
“They’ve accused us of scaremongering, yet that’s exactly what’s happened,” he said, adding: “And it’s particularly devastating because they’ve trashed the polluter pays principle.”The Government insists that the requirement to reduce pollution in rivers remains in law, but the Office for Environmental Protection wrote to Mr Gove and Ms Coffey on Wednesday warning that the plan to scrap nutrient neutrality was a “regression”.
