A food company most famous for its baked beans once had an office in Watford and the building it occupied is still in use today.
The Watford Observer is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we recall a view along what is now Exchange Road towards the ‘the Heinz building’.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This is a view, looking along part of Exchange Road, that can only be easily seen by pedestrians as its direction is against the flow of traffic.“In fact, when this photo was taken in 1962, it had only just become a one-way street when it became part of Watford’s early one-way system.
“The road was originally known as Upton Road and led straight into the High Street rather than 'flying over' it as today’s road does. “The building at the far end is Exchange House which was taken by H J Heinz Foods in 1968. Even today, some people still call it ‘the Heinz building'.”
