Memories of Garners bakery that was located at the junction of High Street and Clarendon Road in Watford.
This location is now home to a popular sandwich and coffee business, continuing a retail trend that dates back around a century.has again joined up with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we recall Garners.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “Apart from a period around the beginning of this century, bread products have been available at this corner since the early 1930s. "Today it is Pret but originally it was a bakery owned by Garner Ltd who occupied a single-storey shop.“By the 1980s the business was run by Clarks Bakery in the same single-storey building.“This building, and the adjacent shops, were later demolished and the current red brick building was constructed.”We want our comments to be a lively and valuable part of our community - a place where readers can debate and engage with the most important local issues.
