On the centenary of the Redding Pit Disaster a new memorial will be unveiled to remember the miners and their families

Hundreds of people are expected to attend an event in a Falkirk village on Saturday to mark the centenary of one of Scotland's worst mining disasters.

On Saturday, an updated memorial to those who died will be unveiled and rededicated at a special ceremony, which starts at 1.30 pm. Relatives of many of those involved will come from as far afield as America, Austria and Canada to take part. The newly refurbished memorial remembers not just the tragedy of the miners who lost their lives. New sculptures, by Ruth Davies, also remember the anxious wait of the families of the men, who gathered round the pithead desperate for news.

The rescue effort involved teams from all over Scotland and in the days that followed the disaster, the bodies of the drowned men were brought to the surface. It was not until November 20 that the bodies of 11 men - who had initially survived the inrush - were found in a dry area which the rescuers had not reached.

The march and ceremony will fulfil a promise that was made to all those who died: 'They shall never be forgotten'.
