The Americans are set to play South Africa in a two-game series on Sept. 21 and 24, but Rapinoe will not play in the first game.
First, this isn’t the only match the celebrate Rapinoe’s lengthy career. She’ll get another celebration in Seattle for OL Reign’s final home game in October, and there’s no way to know her final game ever thanks to the NWSL postseason.But it’s clear the USWNT game is going to be the highest profile event this fall as part of her retirement. Obviously, we can expect a big family presence and Sue Bird, but it might mean some former teammates as well.
The forward enters her final game with 63 goals and 73 assists for the USWNT, both of which rank in the top 10 in U.S. history. Rapinoe appeared in three matches at this summer’s World Cup, logging 80 minutes as the U.S. lost in the round of 16.
