“Coming from a disabled creator, I want to empower people with their choices and ensure they are visible.”
Back in 2007, Watterson caught the MRSA superbug in hospital after an operation, which caused irreparable damage to her left leg. Three years later, at age 43, she opted to have her leg amputated. “Effectively, the decision had already been made for me,” Watterson explains. “But it left me with a lot to accept in terms of my body image.” Adjusting to life with a disability didn’t discourage Watterson from doing difficult things, but rather pushed her forward.
In 2013, “life was good”, Watterson enthuses. She had a new fiancé, but the walking aids she relied on didn’t reflect her. “I was left with gruesome sticks,” she says. “Grey, or too old for me, and patterned with flowers.” Her response? Creating a range of bold, colourful, glittering canes, which to her delight prompted compliments, rather than comments on her disability. “People feel like they have the right to ask you intrusive questions,” Watterson explains.
