🎙️ As mcflymusic go full 80s rock for their seventh album, they talk to shaun_curran about getting high, falling out, and why they never want to be called a boy band again
“It was kind of anti-climatic,” Jones says. “I was walking down the street thinking everyone was going to know me.” He starts to strut jokingly around the studio. “I was walking round M&S in my sunnies – and nothing. Not one person! We were number one!”
“It was starting to get creepy,” Poynter adds, telling me about some of the more outrageous fan mail he’d receive. “It’s the ultimate dream,” Fletcher adds of success. “But you do lose your anonymity.” Relations in the band were also getting strained. There were personal issues – Poynter went into rehab; Fletcher was struggling with his, something he went public with in 2013 – but also a lot of suspicion and jealousy as side projects started to emerge. “You’d see something on Instagram and go, ‘Why is that happening?’” Jones recalls. “There as a lot of, ‘Why is he focusing more on that?’” Poynter says.
They did group therapy to mend bridges. What was that like? “Shit”, Judd says to much laughter. “I think all that did for us was create a safe space to say hard things,” Jones adds. “But it’s like a marriage. You’re together forever, right? And a one-year blip in 20 years is absolutely nothing.”A one-off reunion show at The O2 Arena in November 2019 kickstarted their second act.
