Last season, Kylian Mbappe finished second of all the players in Europe’s top five leagues, with only a relentless Bayern Munich forward ahead of him.It most obviously applies to goalscoring, as Robert Lewandowski was the only player who denied him a European Golden Shoe, scoring 35 goals to Mbappe’s 28.
But more intriguingly, it also applies to assists. Only Thomas Muller created more goals than Mbappe, 18 to 17. Eight of Muller’s assists, incidentally, were for Lewandowski. Take away their partnership, and Mbappe was the best creator and the best goalscorer in Europe. There are several caveats to all this, of course — the number of games played, the standard of respective leagues. You know all the familiar arguments. But that isn’t really the point.
The point is Mbappe had become, for the first time, a genuinely dangerous all-rounder. He’d been a dangerous dribbler from the moment he made his professional debut. He soon became a prolific goalscorer. But the creative aspect of his game was relatively new; Mbappe had never recorded more than eight assists in a Ligue 1 campaign. Last time out, he more than doubled his previous best.
