The defeat at Kilmarnock saw the holders exit the Viaplay Cup as Brendan Rodgers suffered his first defeat since returning.

Celtic's new Bhoys would have been told from the minute they walked in the door that every defeat is treated as a disaster by the club’s fanbase.

The Danish Under 21 international chalked up his 75th appearance for the Hoops on Sunday and suffered only his fourth domestic defeat. That stat sums up Celtic’s dominance since the former Fulham youth academy player arrived from MK Dons in January 2022. The club announced last week that all tickets for both games are 60,000 sell-outs and the midfielder believes if that doesn’t ram home the size of the club then nothing will. And while joining a club of Celtic’s stature is a huge pull, it comes with its own pressure.

“I don’t think people understand the magnitude of the club until they are really up here. You hear things about Celtic and Rangers being really big clubs, but until you are actually here in the city and really feel it I don’t think you can get the same sense of that. It might not have been much fun this week but O’Riley is convinced his team will click into gear the more they get used to playing under their new boss. He added: “We maybe haven’t been as free flowing as we would like to be but it’s going to take a little bit of time.

“I hope for good things as I feel there is a lot of potential in the team. We’re such a young group when you look at it. We have a few experienced players, which is important, but I’m 22 and feel I’m one of the older players in the team now because we’ve signed a lot of young players. I just think that’s a good thing and a strength because young players tend to be pretty hungry coming into an environment like this.
