Man United's U21s played Salford City in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday and a familiar face was in the opposition's dugout.
Neil Wood helped 17 academy players make their first-team debuts at Manchester United during his tenure at the club.
The EFL Trophy, which some critics want rid of, is not considered a priority for most football league sides and Salford were already out of the competition prior to the visit of United's youngsters to the Peninsula Stadium. "I thought he showed some real glimpses of quality and what he has. He's technically a very good player, he's very sharp and sees things on the ball, but I think there are a few players who stood out today.
The youngster was given his first-team debut by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against Newcastle in February 2021 and four days after that game, Solskjaer handed Shoretire another appearance from the bench in the Europa League. "Hopefully we'll see loads of him in the future. He's got some skills and attributes that we think are going to make a very good player here. It's a platform, of course, tonight, just 15 minutes. It's something to build on, something to remember for him at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer, a big supporter of Shoretire, had been sacked in November 2021 and Ralf Rangnick had given him those minutes. "I think what people don't realise about Shola is he's been at this level a long time," Wood said. "He's still so young and we took him to Valencia with United a few years ago for the UEFA Youth League when he was 14.
