What does the psych stand for in Manchester Psych Fest? Psychedelia, obviously, but beyond that, the definition has expanded since its 1960s origins.
But as the face of Manchester rapidly changes, there are still exciting pockets of independence in this corner of the city. For every Odder closed to make way for a Costa Coffee, there’s a YES, or a Sandbar, or a Big Hands. Old and new businesses, all fiercely independent and ideologically aligned.The Circle Square development was transformed into a festival village for the day.
And for every garage rock-tinged melody from The Murlocs, there was a trip-hop-influenced noise rock wall of sound from Just Mustard. The reaction from the crowd would lead you to think The Lovely Eggs are probably deserving of slots a little higher up the bill, but what they do here works so, so well, you’d be reluctant to mess with such a winning formula. The vibe was relentlessly positive – and one that set the tone for the rest of the festival.
Closing out at The Ritz as the last of the festival’s main headline acts, Ezra Furman looked overwhelmed by the response of the crowd when she took to the stage shortly before midnight. What followed was an intimate and warm-natured set, and a fitting end to an intense day on Oxford Road.
